Dr. Schmidt grew up in the New Hampshire Seacoast area. He graduated from UNH in 1972 with a degree in microbiology and a minor in animal science. He then went on to the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he earned his DVM degree, cum laude, in 1978. During his time at Ohio State, he became a member of the society of Phi Zeta, the Veterinary Honor Society. Before opening Lafayette Animal Hospital in 1994, he worked at both three and five-doctor practices.
Dr. Schmidt is a charter member of the Veterinary Laser Society, and is particularly committed to veterinary surgery. He has advanced training and experience in the use of the surgical laser.
He currently lives here on the NH seacoast, with his wife, Brenda, along with their three dogs, Julie (Boston Terrier), Scooter (French Bulldog), and their cats, Dewey, Belle, Wilma, and Fred. Dr. Schmidt and Brenda are extremely proud of their two children, Katie and Sam. Katie is a partner at a successful law firm in downtown Seattle, while she and her husband stay busy raising Dr. Schmidt and Brenda’s two granddaughters. Sam is currently an executive chef at an award-winning restaurant here in the Seacoast area.
Dr. Schmidt is heavily involved in the Portsmouth Rotary Club. When he isn’t here at the animal hospital, you can find him at a Rotary meeting, or working on his exquisite garden at his home. He always has baseball trivia on the top of his head to quiz anyone who enjoys the sport!
Dr. Schmidt invites you to visit him and all of our staff at Lafayette Animal Hospital!
